Financial Tips For Furloughed Workers

Posted on January 10, 2019

More than 800,000 employees are living without a paycheck due to the government partial shutdown.  That means many people may be struggling to pay their loans, credit cards, and mortgages or even put food on the table for their families.  Even if you can survive on your savings, the loss of income with no end in sight can be overwhelming for anyone.  Please note that there are steps you can consider taking to keep up with your financial obligations during this difficult time.  Polish National Credit Union wants you to know that we’re here to help and depending on your personal situation, consider the following options.

1. Apply For Unemployment
Furloughed employees are eligible to receive financial assistance during the shutdown.  Apply for unemployment benefits as some additional cash will assist in paying your bills although you don’t receive your normal compensation.

To learn more about what you can expect from unemployment insurance as a furloughed worker, visit this government website for resources:  https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/furlough-guidance/#url=Unemployment-Insurance-Resources

2. Review Your Finances
With money being tighter than usual, now is the time to re-examine how you spend your money.  The most important item is to review your discretionary spending.  Do you go out to eat? Perhaps consider a home cooked meal.  Do you go out to the movies? Consider having a movie night at home with popcorn and hot chocolate with the family.  Do you enjoy shopping?  Invite your friends over for a clothing swap instead.  It is important to remember that very small changes like these can make a big difference through these tough times.

3. Consider Temporary, Part-time Work
Depending on your individual situation, you may need income sooner than later.  It may feel awkward to start a new job knowing that you’ll be going back to your full-time position.  Perhaps participate in a part-time job that you’re able to control on your own term, such as driving for a ride-share company while you wait to return to work.

Being furloughed can’t be easy, but hopefully these simple tips will help you increase your chances of staying financially secure until you receive your regular paycheck again.
